The excitement built as all five of us drove to the port of Charleston. When we turned the corner and saw the ship, our jaws dropped. It was HUGE! Well, at least it was for us. By the time we made it to the gangplank, we were almost giggling with excitement. Then, as we entered the ship, our jaws dropped at the gorgeous and opulent entrance of the ship. Polished brass, lavish chandeliers, and mirrored elevators gleamed a brilliant welcome to all who entered. Quickly ushered to the Lido deck for lunch, we were greeted with smiling waiters and complimentary champagne. And the sumptuous Italian buffet had both the Hubs and my dad returning for 2nds, and even thirds! And then…we found the ice cream machine!!!
That first cruise was nothing short of amazing. A five-day trip to the Bahamas was our first trip to the Caribbean. We took a tour of Nassau, and went snorkling in crystal clear water. Our son alternated hanging out with us and the kids in the teen club. Mom quickly found her “spot” and sat and read and quilted the entire week, while Dad, the Hubs, and I explored the ship, played ping pong, and napped in the sun. We ate all our meals together, and then as the Lad hung out with his new friends, we explored the nightlife – enjoying music, shows, dancing, and just people watching.
When we departed, we talked about how it was a magical vacation for everyone. There is something for everyone on board, and whether you wanted to just sit and relax, or get involved and play all week, it was the perfect vacation for all ages. We’ve been on several cruises since then, both with and without my parents and our son. But, it’s that first cruise that is one we talk about when we plan for the next one.
