After Christmas, my birthday has to be my favorite holiday. Who doesn’t love all the personal attention? More than the cake (I actually prefer pie), more than the presents, it’s the cards and notes that mean the most. I’ve kept almost every birthday card I’ve ever received. Going back and reading them brings back so many memories. Seeing my grandmother’s handwriting makes me feel like she’s still here with me. And reading those loving notes from my son as a young boy, and now a young man, brings a tear of happiness to my eye every time. Reading all the poems my mother wrote, personal notes from my father, knowing my husband spent time to pick out just the right card, it all makes me feel loved and important.
Emails and Facebook greetings just aren’t the same – it’s easy to quickly type “Happy Birthday” on Facebook and leave it at that. That special personal touch is gone and our mailboxes greet us with junk mail and bills, but not a single birthday card. Let’s bring birthdays back!
