Crafty Saturday – How to Cut Basic Layers

When I first started making cards, only two things intimidated me: stamping and cutting paper.  What??  Shocking isn’t it?   I can’t begin to tell you how many wrong-sized pieces of card stock went in my scrap bin!  And then, once I got the pieces cut write, I was afraid I’d smear my stamping, or stamp a sentiment upside down and I’d have to start all over again. 

Not to be outdone by a pack of paper, I was determined to conquer my fears.  There had to be a formula that just needed figured out!  Once I quit being afraid, I realized a little simple math was all that was needed. 

Cutting card stock layers is all about fractions.  Subtraction equal amounts off both the length and the width and you’ve got it made!  See what I’m talking about on today’s Crafty Saturday video.  And get the measurements below for crating simple 1/4″ and 1/8″ borders and frame.

When creating 1/4″ borders, subtract 1/4″ from 2 sides of the paper (length and width). 

1/4″ inch Border – 2 layers
Base:  8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
Layer 1:  5 1/4″ x 4″
Layer 2:  5″ x 3 3/4″

1/4″ Border – 4 Layers
Base:  8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
Layer 1:  5 1/4″ x 4″
Layer 2:  5″ x 3 3/4
Layer 3:  4 3/4″ x 3 1/2″

When creating 1/8″ borders, subtract 1/8″ from 2 sides of the paper (length and width).  I like to start at 5 1/8, to allow more of the card base to show, and create a more centralized focal point. 

1/8″ inch Border – 2 layers
Base:  8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
Layer 1:  5 1/8″ x 3 7/8: 
Layer 2:  5″ x 3 3/4″

1/8″ Border – 4 Layers
Base:  8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
Layer 2:  5″ x 3 3/4″
Layer 3:  4 7/8″ x 3 5/8″
​Layer 4: 4 3/4″ x 3 1/2″
